To create a favourable habitat for fish and plants in both ponds and aquaria, it is necessary to ensure adequate oxygenation that enriches the water with the amount of oxygen necessary for the development of 'good' bacteria.
\nDuring the warmer months, oxygenation tends to decrease as excessive heating of the pond or aquarium causes oxygen deficiency; the water thus loses its natural balance and the fish do not receive enough oxygen to live optimally. A lack of oxygen can also encourage the growth of harmful bacteria and algae.
\nExcessive cold also causes oxygenation problems: without proper ventilation, water currents are not created. The pond may therefore freeze, depriving plants and fish of oxygen.
