Small amphibious, carnivorous plant with ribbon-like leaves. Very difficult to adapt to submergence when grown hydroponically, it is not a plant recommended for plant aquarium neophytes. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water and well-matured bottoms with a fine grain size. In suitable conditions it forms dense, beautiful submerged meadows, which must, however, be pruned regularly.
is a small ribbon-like marsh plant. In the wild it rarely lives completely submerged, preferring to proliferate above water but on strongly moist soil or covered by a thin veil of water, in practice keeping rhizome and roots in water and foliage completely above water. For these reasons, the adaptation phase to submersion is usually very critical for this plant, especially for wild-collected specimens, somewhat less so for hydroponically grown specimens. The species has developed on soils that are particularly poor in nutrients, especially in terms of Nitrogen and Phosphates, limiting conditions that have led the species to develop alternative systems to obtain the necessary nutrients. The pressure exerted by evolutionary selection has thus transformed this plant into a carnivore, equipping it with tiny traps, known as 'otriculae' (hence the name given to the Genus), positioned mainly in the basal zone of the rosette (collar), and by means of which the plant is able to capture tiny animal life forms (microfauna), then dissolving them by means of a special acid and thus assimilating the nutrients.
In aquaria the plant appears as a row of tiny rosettes connected by a slender creeping stem. Each rosette varies in height from 2 to 5 cm and has its own small, slender root system.
Family: Lentibulariaceae
Provenance: Asia (found in Burma, Laos, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and southern China).
Water values: Temp 17-27°C; ph 5-7.2; gh 3-12 dGH
Multiplescation: by cutting
Light: medium until the plant goes through the delicate acclimatisation/cultivation phase (which can last months), strong thereafter.
Growth: this plant suffers a great deal from being placed in an aquarium and any subsequent movements, so it takes a long time to get over the acclimatisation/attachment phase, even two or more months. Once this critical initial phase has been overcome, the growth rate increases rapidly and becomes surprisingly high. The plant propagates by stolonation.
Fertilisation: this species has a mixed feeding system, it can take up nutrients like a normal aquatic plant or alternatively (or simultaneously) choose to utilise its otriculi to capture microfauna. In its natural habitats, the use of otricolae is massive (boundary conditions dictate this) but in aquaria it is much less so (especially if the aquarium is well catered for nutritionally). It can therefore grow decently both in inert (but well matured!) aquaria without column fertilisation and CO2 planting, and in high-tech aquaria with heavy management, full CO2, over-performing bottoms and massive column fertilisation. Having said that, growth is obviously much more vigorous where column-feeding, CO2 supply and a nutrient-rich bottom is provided. Very important in my opinion is Iron, an element of which Utricularia graminifolia is particularly greedy, and without which its foliage rapidly turns yellow, denoting the typical problems of ferric chlorosis.
