Technical Background

Sometimes, most aquarists experience a situation where a sudden amount of dissolved and/or suspended organic matter poses a serious health risk to aquarium inhabitants. Basically, all aquarium inhabitants, regardless of their purchase price, number or origin, should be looked after with equal care in maintaining water quality, but there is no doubt that an aquarist who has invested considerable resources in fish, invertebrates, and/or plants risks losing a considerable amount if the water quality deteriorates to the point where these organisms begin to perish. The typical approach to solve this problem is to carry out a substantial water change and insert activated carbon or similar chemical filtration methods to help remove the substances responsible for the deterioration of water quality. However, there are times when this method does not work fast enough. Similarly, if the organic load of the aquarium increases significantly with the addition of new inhabitants, a spike in the concentration of organic matter may occur, which will have a negative impact on the health of the system's inhabitants.

RedoxIclean is a useful tool for hobbyists wishing to support present chemical and physical filtration while adapting to an increased organic load and/or concentration of organic matter (intended or unintended) in any aquarium. It performs this task by reacting immediately with latent (non-living) organic matter and breaking it down to the molecular level, making it readily removable by biological and chemical filtration. Most experienced hobbyists learn to 'expect the unexpected'; having a bottle of RedoxIclean on hand can help lower the impact of organic load problems, and sometimes avoid them, to such an extent that the filtration already in place can gradually adapt and compensate for any residual organic matter. It would be useful to monitor the ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) in aquaria, especially in densely populated tanks (regardless of their total volume); a sudden and unusual drop in ORP essentially indicates that the concentration of organic matter in the aquarium has increased beyond normal levels. This increase usually leads to high ammonia and phosphate concentrations; if left unchecked, the aquarium's appearance and its inhabitants will begin to suffer.

Instructions and Guidelines

Read instructions completely before use. Do not overdose. RedoxIclean improves water quality by increasing the redox potential (ORP) in the aquarium. Do not usein systems lacking an adequate amount of latent organic matter with which to react; in systems that have been running for less than 20 days; in the first 12 hours after a water change of more than 25% of the total system volume; in aquaria where a slow-release Iodine supplement (such as Brightwell Aquatics Iodion; Lugol's solution is safe. If you are unsure whether your Iodine supplement has this feature, contact the manufacturer for more details); in aquaria where chelated copper is being actively used; in aquaria where chelated iron fertilisation is being used. Remove activated carbon from the system before use and stop using ozone for 7 days before adding RedoxIclean to the system. Wait 2 days before using RedoxIclean after adding new inhabitants to the system. The use of RedoxIclean can temporarily give the water a magenta hue that will turn tea-coloured as soon as the organic matter has oxidised; the water will gradually become transparent again afterwards. The use of activated carbon after the administration of RedoxIclean will accelerate the clarification process. Do not allow the ORP to exceed ~450 mV. To neutralise immediately, add an equal amount of Erase-Cl to the system in an area with strong water movement.

Marine aquariums: Add up to 15 drops (~0.75 ml) per 189 litres (50 gallons) twice daily at intervals of at least 12 hours, for 10 consecutive days. If invertebrates appear to close their polyps or shells, decrease the dosage of 50% and use for 20 consecutive days. Wait at least 7 days before dosing again.

Freshwater aquaria: Add up to 15 drops (~0.75 ml) per 94.6 litres (25 gallons) once a day for 7 consecutive days. Wait at least 7 days before dosing again.

In general, a relatively high ORP is associated with good water quality; the opposite is usually true for a relatively low ORP. If the source of excess organic matter affecting system water quality is known or easily removed, it should be physically removed from the system (and not left to decompose) as soon as possible to facilitate rapid improvements in water quality. Note that although RedoxIclean reacts immediately with organic matter to lessen its impact on aquarium inhabitants, it should not be construed as the optimal solution that cures all problems associated with these sudden, massive spikes in organic matter; it is highly unlikely that any one-size-fits-all approach, without an immediate, massive water change and removal of visible traces of particulate organic matter, will accomplish this task before any adverse effects on aquarium inhabitants can occur. Thus, no guarantees, implicit or explicit, are given as to the ability of this supplement to prevent the impacts associated with poor water quality on aquarium inhabitants. Finally, it is up to each enthusiast to take proper care of his or her aquarium. This includes limiting the rate at which nutrients such as phosphate are increased.

Attention: Keep out of reach of children. Not suitable for human use. In case of contact with eyes, rinse eyes and eyelids with water for 15 minutes. If swallowed, drink large quantities of water. Contact doctor immediately. Wash skin immediately; contact with skin or organic fibres will result in staining.
