Technical Background

The benefits of vitamin C for aquatic organisms are largely related to increased tissue growth, especially following injury or disease. Corals and other species, in particular, have been shown to benefit enormously from regular, controlled dosing of vitamin C by increasing their soft tissue growth rate; this is of particular interest to coral propagation enthusiasts and researchers when tissue is damaged following colony cuttings and/or individual polyps. Growth systems in which vitamin C is administered regularly tend to have higher growth rates when compared to systems with identical environmental conditions in which vitamin C is not administered. These benefits are believed to be a result of the positive impact that vitamin C has on the immune system; this benefit is also seen in fish as well as other invertebrates in marine aquaria.

Vitamins are compounds needed in small concentrations for vital metabolic processes; the amount of vitamins needed varies between species. Short-term vitamin deficiencies can normally be tolerated by most organisms, however, a long-term deficiency tends to lead to abnormal situations, poor health and sometimes death. Conversely, an extreme overdose, if ingested, can adversely affect a specimen by being toxic, although the impact is unlikely to be permanent. Decreasing the vitamin dosage usually leads to a full recovery of the health of the affected specimen. For these reasons, it is advisable to use Vītamarin-C to supply vitamins to aquarium inhabitants by adding it to food or administering it directly into the water, but not in both ways at the same time except in the cases noted when using it with organisms that have suffered tissue damage.

Vītamarin-C does not require refrigeration, however storage in a cool place, away from light, will prolong the activity of the vitamins. Refrigeration maximises the product's shelf life.

Instructions and Guidelines

To enrich feed (recommended): place the food in a clean container such as a small bowl and add only the amount of Vītamarin-C needed to saturate the feed. Allow at least 5 minutes before feeding, giving the vitamins time to be thoroughly absorbed. Liquid feed suspensions can be fortified by adding 1 ml (about 8 drops) of Vītamarin-C for every 10 ml of liquid suspension; shake to mix and allow 5 minutes before feeding. The maximum benefit of any liquid food suspension is achieved by targeting the organisms you intend to feed rather than simply pouring it into the water stream and letting it disperse throughout the aquarium.

Direct administration in the aquarium: start by adding 2ml (approx. 16 drops) of Vītamarin-C per 76 litres of water per week for the first 4 weeks of use; this corresponds to about 2 drops per 76 litres per day. Then gradually increase the weekly dosage to 4ml per 76 litres over the following 4 weeks and maintain this dosage. [Note: If using Vītamarin-C together with Vītamarin-M, decrease the dosage by approximately 50%]. Starting with a lower dosage will avoid harming the aquarium inhabitants and will allow you to notice small changes in the appearance of the system that will indicate the efficacy and necessity of the product.

You can double the Vītamarin-C dosage if you intend to fortify food for organisms that appear to be in poor health, including fish and invertebrates. Maintain the increased dosage only for as long as you deem necessary, and at the same time monitor the water quality carefully with each feeding and apply any necessary corrections. There are no curative claims in Vītamarin-C, however the positive impact of vitamin C on the immune system in general has been strongly observed.
