Granular super active carbon (GAC) produced from selected qualities of coconut shells high density, a large volume of micropores and a high equivalent surface area.
It is perfect for the purification of drinking water for aquarium use thanks to its high capacity to remove chlorine, chloramines, lead, odours, and residues of pharmaceutical treatments.
The package contains a sock for placing carbon inside a filter.
Whimar Carbon Major meets ANSI/NSF standard 61 for drinking water applications and is one of the very few carbons on the market with an Iodine absorption capacity of 1200 mg/l.

*= ASTM (Moisture Content of Activated Carbon) is the moisture content of activated carbon and is measured as weight loss after heating to 150 °C and allowed to dry to a constant weight (usually after 3 hours). The moisture content of packed activated carbon usually increases during transport and/or storage. Users of activated carbon in applications where humidity can be critical should be aware of this.
Meaning of parameters:
CTC (Carbon Tetrachloride Activity):
measures carbon tetrachloride content, percentage by weight on carbon, at concentrations close to saturation in air. The method is basically a measurement of the pore volume of activated carbon and is mainly used as a quality assurance test for the production of activated carbon.
Iodine Number:
The iodine number (or 'iodine value') (ASTM D4607) is an indication of the available surface area in m2/g of virgin carbon. Over the years, it has become synonymous with the 'activity' of activated carbon and is widely used as a quality control (QC) parameter in the production and reactivation of activated carbon; it provides an indicative measure of the ability of the carbon to adsorb certain elements.
Apparent Density:
The solid, or skeletal, density of most activated carbons is generally between 2.0-2.1 g/cc. However, this would describe a material with essentially no surface area and no adsorption capacity. For granular activated carbon (GAC), a much more practical density is the bulk density (A.D.); qhis density is significantly lower than the solid density, due to the presence of pores within the particles and the empty space between them. In most commercial GACs, the A.D. variation is between 0.4 and 0.5 g/cc.
Abrasion Number:
The abrasion number (AWWA B604) measures the structural strength of granular activated carbon. It is a measure of the particle's ability to resist shear forces caused by particles rubbing together or by particles rubbing against another surface. It is measured by shaking granules with steel balls in a container under certain conditions and expressed as a percentage reduction in mean particle diameter (mpd).
Hardness:
The hardness number (DSTM 20) measures the external integrity against wear and tear of small spots of activated carbon. It is expressed as the percentage of loss on a particular sieve after shaking the granules under certain conditions.
Ash:
If it is part of the carbon raw material, the ash generally varies between 2 and 20 per cent by weight in commercial granular activated carbons. Some of the total ash may be water-soluble, normally a larger amount acid-soluble, and the remainder deeper within the carbon's skeletal structure may actually be insoluble. Natural ash is normally not detrimental to the adsorption process, and standard activity tests report the efficiency of granular activated carbons including ash weight. However, in some regenerated granular activated carbons, ash that is a residue from previous uses may block part or all of the micropore structure that is vital for removing organic compounds at ultra-low levels. Similarly, if the ash is due to previous impregnation for another use, or due to any other adulterant, the performance of the carbon can be seriously compromised.
Moisture as packed:
The moisture content of activated carbon (ASTM D2867) is measured as weight loss after heating to 150 °C and allowed to dry to a constant weight (usually after 3 hours). The moisture content of packed activated carbon usually increases during transport and storage. Once packed, it must usually be less than 5%
U.S. standard Sieve size:
The size range of granular activated carbon (GAC) is usually expressed as the sieve size, expressed in mm or US Mesh, between which most of the GAC is retained. It is measured by shaking a sample of granular activated carbon through a defined series of sieves. In metric units, it is the width between the sieve threads expressed in mm. In the US Mesh system, the sieve size number refers to the openings between the sieve threads per inch. For example; an 8×30 US Mesh activated carbon means that at least 93% of the granules by weight is larger than 30 Mesh (0.60 mm) and at least 90% of the granules by weight is smaller than 8 Mesh (2.36 mm).
